Maria Marshall is a British Artist born in India. She has an International reputation as an
acclaimed Artist and Curator. Curating a section of International Artists for the Bhutan Arts
festival 2015.
Marshall has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum, New York, Guggenheim and Pompidou,
Paris. She was the Artist Spotight at Sundance film festival in 2009 and more recently was
invited for a solo exhibition at the Mac’s Museum, Belgium.
She is known for her carefully constructed short looped film installations that explore
physical and emotional spaces. Through concepts she films scenarios that may include
historical or political threads.
Marshall has consistently created work that is related to her family and also in a wider
context ‘the family’. This includes work that reacts to outside issues that may penetrate the
family unit.
This work is a metaphor for the silencing of a Byzantine church and simultaneously refers to
a hystorical context. When there were cholera epidemics in the area, the Church would tie
up their doors as a symbol of protection for the town.
